About
the Artist
Caroline was trained at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts in
the 70s, studying Ceramics and Weaving and staying on for a postgrad
year where she attaining the Courtaulds Prize for best textile student
in that year. On leaving college she pursued other interests for
neariy 15 years before a chance meeting with an amazing octogenarian,
Miron Grindea , who had known many famous artists in the 50s in
Paris, led her back into painting, into the discovery of etching
and towards her first one man show in 1994. She spent almost 8 years
refining the skills of technically skilled representational:impressionistic
oil paintings, before stopping painting whilst obtaining a Msc in
Environmental Psychology. Returning to art in 2001...she dramatically
changed her style ....choosing to use acrylic on hand crafted canvases
and paint just what a place or situation meant to her - effectively
removing the representational element of her paintings. She now
works as an Artist and a Business Consultant and continues to research
the use of image in communication at Kings College part-time.

Statement
"My own personal development process led me into looking into
environmental psychology and researching the viewing of image(s).
The culmination of that personal process of examination dramatically
changed my painting style. I feel that the representational element
now has less validity and that the important thing is using paint
to create an emotional response to a place or situation at that
particular point in time. Once a "completed" image leaves
my ownership I have no right to assume that what inspired me to
paint it will be anything like that which inspires a person who
is viewing it. My images have no pre-ordained titles, and the viewer
is expected to ask: What does it mean to me? What does this represent?
What would I call it? I only want to paint good feelings for places,
so the resultant images are colourful, vibrant and energetic, allow
a mass of options and possibilities for the reader, and allowing
their interpretation of the image to alter as their moods change."
