Artist's Statement
"Painting in oils has been a rewarding activity for me since 1989.
This is my preferred medium, and I'm entirely self-taught.
My work originates from a meditative space; the majority incorporates the impressions of light and perspective associated with landscape paintings. Creating the effects of varying contrasts with colour pigment is the basis of my fascination and passion for the visual arts.
As I work paint is applied quickly and directly onto the support with little or no mixing in an extemporaneous fashion. This method retains the vividness and purity of the individual pigments. The results stimulate further spontaneous applications of paint until the complete support is covered.
Usually a piece starts with no preconceived idea and the work is allowed to evolve as the colour appears on the support. On other occasions a predetermined title or theme is used to focus the meditation process.
A category for this work would be creative self-expression, with images that are overwhelmingly
abstract and expressive.
I acknowledge the major part my subconscious plays while I paint. I often surprise myself with the finished effect, which can produce responses such as amazement, delight, humility, humour or just plain jaw dropping awe. Sometimes a work will present myself, or others, with a narrative.
At other times the beauty expressed needs no commentary."
