About
the Heath Marshall
Heath was born in 1969 in Cardiff, Wales. He comes from a very creative
background: his mother is a talented figurative artist and his father
is a qualified architect. Although he displayed an early interest
in Art and Design, it was tennis that dominated his life until the
age of 25. During that time, he travelled the world playing tennis
and five of those years were spent in America where he had been
given a sports scholarship. He graduated with a degree in Political
Science and then spent fourteen month in Japan teaching English.
Since then he also obtained a law degree. It was during this intense
period of studying, which was required of him that he started painting
again.
Most of
his time is now spent painting/drawing, researching and expanding
his knowledge of art. He considers the works of Paul K Lee, Ben
Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Howard Hodgkin to have had the most
influence on his own style. Heath continues to explore his interest
in architectural composition and forms as a means of expression.
Artist's
Statement
"As an abstract
artist I am more concerned with form and colour as an alternative
to subject matter. It is not an aim of mine to give a representation
of our surroundings or a particular object, although I might take
ideas from certain objects as architectural forms and crockery.
Alternatively, I endeavour to establish harmony between architectonic,
geometrical, and rectilinear painting in conjunction with the right
application of colour. Colour is equally as important as the general
design and I will spend a lot of time perfecting the tone of a particular
colour, which is in juxtaposition to another colour while being
aware of its relationship to other colours in the painting. My primary
objective therefore is to establish harmony both in terms of the
general design and the use of colour.
I acquire ideas
primarily from experiences, which are visual, cerebral and emotional
in nature. Architecture is one source of inspiration that I use
quite often as a means of expression.
Finally, art is
not subject to limits imposed by representation."
