Artist's Statement
"My work is inspired by decay found with the natural and urban envirnments. These intrinsic textures are interwoven within the work and entice the viewer to observe the work from numerous angles.
The initial starting point for the subject matter may include oxidized metals, rust staining, weather corrosion and scratched surfaces. One may view these as detrimental aspects of our surroundings but closer inspection shows an intricate and valuable study. It is this close engagement with the viewer, which is a key focus of the work. Surface texture help illustrate the passage of time and the existance of the object in a designated environment. It is a very romantic notion to view the destructive qualities of decay in a positive manner with it's beautification. The beauty viewed is on insight to the direct history of the object.
The work is undertaken in oil pastel, inks and metal leaf. It is the fusion of these components which create the depth and texture within the work. These paintings may contain over 300 layers of colour which creates a challenging base to carve and scratch into".
