Artist's Statement
"Having obtained a Fine Art 'A' level back in 1970 I was encouraged by work colleagues to persevere with my flagging oil paintings and pencil drawings. However, it was not until 1996, that through an evening class things really began for me when, by a stroke of luck, I discovered pastel.

Pastels lit a fire in me I had never experienced. There was a real urgency and vitality in my painting and those pastels released an energy I did not know I had. Since then, my early retirement and the building of my studio in Hutton have enabled my art career to develop- without hindrance!

Landscapes and townscapes have since become my forte. I have entered local and national competitions and exhibitions with some success. My art materials travel with me everywhere, Tuscany now a favourite. I enjoy capturing local scenes, and work "en plein air" whenever I can.

In the studio I tend to favour soft pastels in my initial build up of a picture, wetting the first sketch and moving the pigment around like watercolour. This process can be repeated a number of times and it is amazing the effects one can get, especially if done on really good quality water-colour paper i.e.600gm weight plus. The process of mixing colour in-situ never ceases to amaze me and the scrumbling of pastel leaves such texture. All combine to make for a more impressionistic approach, which I continually strive to develop. I am currently researching abstract work, pop art of the 60's but Turner and the Norfolk artist Edward Seago remain my keystone in the world of art.

I am currently engaged in one-to-one workshops at my studio, have been invited to talk on my work to local Rotary group and have been requested to act as tutor for a pensioners group in Ilford Essex."
